WMATA SILVER
LINE PHASE 1
Dulles, VA
PROJECT SCOPE
2014 saw completion of the new Silver Line, a 23.5-mile, $2.1 B transit system extension connecting WMATA’s existing Metrorail to Dulles Airport and serving the fast-growing Dulles Corridor. Key project goals were balancing concerns for sustainability and landscape integration with acknowledgement of Metrorail’s architectural signatures. DGA’s 10-year effort (from schematic design to construction phase services) encompassed the development of tightly coordinated approaches for at-grade and elevated stations, inclusive of platforms, mezzanines, bridges and entrances. In keeping with WMATA precedent, station spaces are characterized by uplighting of architectural surfaces, yet are designed to meet rigorous criteria and energy-use requirements.
